3D Learning Tools for Education: A comparison of AR, VR and Stereo 3D, PART ONE


Most of us have either experienced or heard of the smash AR (Augmented Reality) smartphone game, Pokemon Go!. It's a great way to get users off of the couch and to explore their environment, all while collecting and interacting with lovable Pokemon characters! When it to comes education, there are more and more schools around the country using various forms of 3D to engage their students like never before possible. From immersive VR (Virtual Reality) environments, to AR models to Stereo 3D Video Explorations, there are a bevy of options available.

In this series of blog articles we'll be endeavoring to go over the difference between AR, VR, and Stereo 3D as well as explore their potential educational applications.

PART ONE: AR (Augmented Reality)

What is AR? Augmented reality integrates and/or Overlays 3D models and diagrams with reality. (ex: Pokemon Go!) Equipment Needed: Typically a smartphone or tablet with appropriate software Other examples: Microsoft Halolens, Google Glass, however these technologies at times blur the lines a bit between AR and VR.

How does it work?: A particular location or object or even a QR code can trigger an AR experience when appropriate app is launched.

Education Applications?: Textbook diagrams can emerge from the physical page for a more in depth educational experience. Students on a field trip can view videos or objects at different locations throughout the trip to enhance understanding.
